Le capitalisme, mais encore le racisme ou le colonialisme allaient y trouver une de leurs justifications idéologiques les plus prégnantes. Le savant et anarchiste russe Pierre Kropotkine (1842-1921) fut l'un de ceux qui combattirent le plus fortement ce discours, entrant sur le terrain même du darwinisme pour montrer que l'entraide est un facteur de l'évolution autant sinon plus important que la compétition.
Cet ouvrage analyse la genèse, le développement et la portée de ce combat, que Kropotkine a mené pendant trente ans en complétant sa relecture de Darwin par celle des analyses de Lamarck sur le rapport entre organisme et milieu. Sans éviter de débattre des difficultés épistémologiques de cette pensée, il ressort de l’étude des bases biologiques de l’anarchisme kropotkinien une invitation à faire pièce à tout discours qui cautionnerait l’injustice sociale au nom de traits prétendument immuables de la nature."
