La pensano così anche i tre protagonisti di questa storia, tre plebei del mare – John Gwin, un afroamericano fuggito dalla schiavitù, Ruben Dekker, un semplice marinaio di Amsterdam, e Mark, ovvero Mary Reed, una donna che si traveste da uomo per poter sopravvivere – le cui vite s'incrociano a bordo di un veliero della Royal African Company. Reclutati a forza su una nave negriera, le inumane condizioni di lavoro e l'infame traffico che sono costretti a svolgere li spinge a ribellarsi insieme all'intero equipaggio. Ma l'ammutinamento contro il tirannico capitano Skinner, gettato in mare con i suoi ufficiali, diventa in realtà l'atto fondativo di un nuovo ordine sociale egualitario – elezione diretta del capitano, mutuo soccorso, equa distribuzione del bottino… – che ribalta le ferree gerarchie in mare e a terra. È il mondo alla rovescia. Un mondo seducente che le potenti autorità di Londra sanno di dover schiacciare. E così scatenano una guerra senza prigionieri tra l'alta società londinese e i pirati d'alto mare. A soccombere saranno i fuorilegge, e i loro corpi appesi sulla forca dondoleranno a lungo nei porti d'America e d'Europa. Eppure saranno proprio loro, le «canaglie di tutto il mondo», a imprimersi nella memoria collettiva come gli eroi positivi di questa storia: uomini (e donne) liberi che pur sapendo di essere destinati a una fine violenta, non hanno voluto vivere in nessun altro modo.
