Il s’agit d’un véritable hymne au sport en général et au rugby en particulier. Le lyrisme, la précision et l’humour avec lesquels ce jeu qui, au début du XXème siècle essaie de percer en France, est décrit, font de Jean Bernier, pour le ballon ovale, ce que sera Antoine Blondin pour le cyclisme, quelques décennies plus tard.
Mais chez Bernier, pacifiste et internationaliste, la Grande Guerre n’est jamais très loin. Les espérances de « ces jeunes hommes au corps habile et fort, à l’âme prompte » avant 1914 sombreront dans la guerre quelques semaines plus tard sous les « tonnerres monotones de la chimie industrielle », dit-il en conclusion de son ouvrage."
