Leur lutte consistait non seulement à pratiquer des avortements, mais aussi des accouchements à domicile. Ces femmes militaient pour que l'accouchement et l'avortement soient contrôlés et voulus par les femmes elles-mêmes. En arrière-plan de la lutte, s'inscrit une partie de la vie à la « Commune », une communauté près d'Aix.
