Le capitalisme et l'économie de marché avaient triomphé. Le marxisme avait perdu. Marx était vraiment mort. Je jugeais donc important de montrer clairement que ni l'URSS ni les autres pays qui, se disant " marxistes ", avaient installé des États policiers n'incarnaient la conception du socialisme de Marx. Je voulais montrer un Marx furieux que ses conceptions aient été déformées jusqu'à être identifiées aux cruautés staliniennes. Je pensais qu'il fallait sauver Marx non seulement de ces pseudo-communistes qui avaient instauré un ordre répressif dans différents coins du monde, mais aussi de ces essayistes et de ces politiciens de l'Ouest qui s'extasiaient alors devant le triomphe du capitalisme."
