Il était né Charles Cortvrint à Bruxelles, vingt-six ans plus tôt. Ses articles dans la presse anarchiste sont signés d'abord du pseudonyme transparent de Courami, puis Charles Ridel, Damashki, Santiago Parane, L'Itinérant et quelques autres noms fantaisistes ; dans son récit autobiographique la Chevauchée anonyme, il se présente à la fois en Parrain et Danton : « A moi seul une fédération de pseudonymes », aimait-il à dire – et le reflet de l'Internationale.
