« Con "Una donna libera" Maria Occhipinti continua il suo racconto autobiografico iniziato con "Una donna di Ragusa". Siamo nel 1946, tornata dal carcere e ricongiuntasi con la bambina nata al confino di Ustica, cerca di rifarsi una nuova vita nella sua città. La difficoltà di sbarcare il lunario e di coltivare i propri affetti ben presto prendono il sopravvento. Sarà costretta a lasciare Ragusa e a intraprendere un viaggio che durerà 30 anni: nel suo bagaglio il ricordo sempre vivo della rivolta del 6 gennaio 1945 contro il richiamo alle armi; una profonda coscienza libertaria; una volontà ferrea nell'affrontare ogni tipo di avversità e difficoltà.
