Sa vie fut marquée d'expériences hors du commun. Militant de l'Unione Sindacale Italiana (USI) dès ses 17 ans, il participe à l'organisation des Arditi del Popolo sur les barricades de Sarzana, puis à la résistance antifasciste lors son exil en France, avant de partir combattre en Espagne dans la colonne italienne, puis d'intégrer le maquis français. Après guerre, il devient à la fois un membre influent de la Fédération anarchiste italienne, le dirigeant national de plusieurs associations antifascistes, un organisateur de la confédération syndicale CGIL, mais aussi l'un des promoteurs de la Ligue pour le désarmement unilatéral. Il était à la fois un véritable tribun, un rédacteur prolixe et un organisateur soucieux du respect des différentes sensibilités. Sa vie durant, Umberto fut également un militant incontournable de l'anarchisme international. Secrétaire de la commission de relations de l'Internationale des fédérations anarchistes (IFA) durant plus de dix ans, il y insuffla son esprit rassembleur et combatif." (4e de couverture)
